Professional vs. At-Home Masks

Professional Treatments you may want to consider include

*Chemical peels ( 30-70 % acid) so you shouldn’t be using this strength unsupervised!

* Oxygen infusion facials

* Hydrafacials-“The Hydrafacial is a multistep facial treatment typically performed with a proprietary machine (Hydrafacial MD) manufactured by Edge Systems,” explains Glen Crawford, MD, chief medical officer for the Schweiger Dermatology Group,  based in Philadelphia. “In one session, aestheticians can use the Hydrafacial [device] to cleanse, exfoliate, extract, and deliver a variety of rejuvenating serums.” You can learn more about Hydrafacials if you go to the website https://www.hydrafacial.com/professional/

*LED light therapy masks: LED has been shown in many studies to improve wrinkles, acne, wound healing, and collagen production. The cost varies, but effective home devices range from $400, while professional treatments are several thousand dollars.

At-Home Alternatives:

  • The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2%: Professional-strength peeling
  • Dr. Dennis Gross LED Face Mask: At-home light therapy
  • Foreo UFO devices: Sonic mask treatments

Here are some ideas for masks you can make yourself, but I can’t guarantee the results! But lots of patients find them effective :

Hydrating Honey Oat Mask:

  • 2 tbsp oatmeal (ground)
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1 tbsp yogurt
  • Mix, apply for 15 minutes, rinse with warm water

Brightening Turmeric Mask:

  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 2 tbsp yogurt
  • 1 tsp honey
  • Apply for 10-15 minutes, rinse thoroughly

Clay Mask:

  • 2 tbsp bentonite clay
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • Water to desired consistency
  • Apply until almost dry, rinse with warm water

Safety Guidelines and Tips

Do :

*Patch test new masks

* Follow timing instructions

*Use clean hands and tools

* Store masks properly

*Remove gently

Don’t:

*Leave masks on too long

* Use expired products

*Apply to broken or irritated skin

* Mix incompatible ingredients

*Use daily unless specified

* Forget to moisturize after

Warning Signs:

  • Excessive burning or stinging
  • Severe redness that doesn’t subside
  • Allergic reactions (hives, swelling)
  • Increased breakouts after multiple uses
  • Skin feels raw or damaged

Budget-Friendly Options

  • The Ordinary masks: $7-12
  • Freeman masks: $3-5
  • Garnier sheet masks: $1-3 each
  • DIY ingredients: Honey, oatmeal, yogurt

Luxury Splurges

  • SK-II Facial Treatment Mask: $135+ for 6 masks
  • La Mer Treatment Lotion Mask: $350+
  • Sisley Black Rose Cream Mask: $162

Consistency is more important than price. A $5 mask used regularly can be more effective than a $100 mask used occasionally.
