60 Year Old Aging And Sun Damage Skin Care Regimen

Daily Skincare Regimen for 60-Year-Old Person with Aging Skin and Sun Damage

A lot of older people are reluctant to use effective skin care products, often viewing them as “cosmetics.”

They need to realize that the program I have suggested below will:

*Greatly improve their aged and sun-damaged skin- you will see noticeable improvements within 4 weeks of starting this regimen. Take monthly photos to monitor progress.

* Reduce further damage and deterioration in your skin health

*Reduce the risk of developing skin cancers and other unpleasant lesions caused by excess solar radiation

What I have suggested is the “bare bones/ essential products only” to reduce the time and cost barriers many people say are the reasons many people don’t use skin care products.

A lot of older people love their hot showers and strong soaps-this needs to change to warm showers and gentle cleansers like the ones I have suggested below.

Also, results won’t happen overnight.

Regular, consistent use of these products will show the best results.

There is a lot that can be done, even with advanced aging and sun damage.

These are what we are trying to improve:

*Rough, leathery skin with some small veins on the cheeks

*A lot of wrinkles, especially crow’s feet at the side of the eyes, and deep forehead furrows, also some deep furrows in the back of the neck in men

*Blotchy brown and red spots/patches over the face.

*Loss of elastin and collagen in the skin causing a gaunt appearance.

*Thin, fragile skin, especially on the forearms and back of hands, with easy bruising, again due to loss of elastin and collagen as a result of UV damage.

Please Note: If you or a friend has these sorts of changes on their face, neck, arms or back of their hands, they should have a full skin check by a doctor experienced in dealing with skin problems. There is a strong chance that they may have one or more skin cancers that need different treatment to what I have described below.

Also, medical strength retinoid (tretinoin) or even a chemotherapy cream like 5-fluorouracil ( Efudix) may need to be prescribed for people with significant solar damage. I have included in the regime below, a low dose tretinoin which you will need to get on prescription from a doctor.

Without meaning to confuse you, I have written other chapters/articles about how to treat Pigmentation, and Wrinkles- these regimes are a bit stronger and more involved, but well worth trying if you want to target those specific problems.

Please don’t be alarmed by all the information here- once you get used to your routine it will only require about 5 minutes twice a day.

HOW TO GET THE BEST RESULTS FROM YOUR SKINCARE REGIMEN

Rule Why It’s Critical Consequence of Skipping
Daily sunscreen application- when UV index is 3 or more

Please refer to my article about Sunscreens which explains SPF, UV index and many other things related to the sun and your skin

Prevents ongoing damage; regular sunscreen alone will cause significant improvements All other efforts become futile
Consistent tretinoin use Only ingredient proven to reverse photoaging ( sun damage) Miss the most powerful anti-aging tool
Proper application amounts Under-application = less effective Waste money on expensive products with poor results
Patience (minimum 12 weeks) Skin cell turnover takes 28+ days in mature skin Changing products too soon prevents seeing results

RED FLAGS – When to Adjust Treatment

Symptom Likely Cause Solution
Excessive peeling/irritation Tretinoin too strong/frequent Reduce to 2x/week, add more moisturizer
New dark spots Inadequate sun protection Increase SPF, reapply more frequently
No improvement after 16 weeks Need stronger active ingredients Consult dermatologist for higher concentrations

Changing, irregular brown moles/spots or tender scaly red patches/lumps

Strong chance of melanoma or other type of skin cancer Seek medical advice from experienced skin doctor as soon as possible
